Ingrid Broomfield, Librarian at Nottingham Girls' High School:

"Linda is an excellent speaker, good at engaging the children and a great ambassador for books and reading."

In the last 18 years I have written over 200 books for 4-14 year olds. I write under my own name as well as ghost-writing books in various best-selling series such as Rainbow Magic, Animal Ark, Heartland and Secret Kingdom.  My books have been translated into over 20 languages and I have a lot of experience talking to groups of children in schools, libraries and at festivals. I am based in Nottingham.

My talks are very interactive and fun, usually focusing on the question 'where do ideas come from' and giving the children hints and tips for their own writing. I like to get the children involved with creating characters and stories as well as reading short extracts from some of my books. I aim to leave them excited and inspired - eager to read more and to write/make up their own stories.

Some of my best known series include My Secret Unicorn, Skating School, Not Quite a Mermaid, Best Friends Bakery and Sophie and the Shadow Woods. Although some of my series are aimed more at girls than boys I have written series that appeal just as much to boys as to girls. I currently like to talk to 6-10 year olds either about my Superpowers series which tells the story of two eight-year-old boys who find Hercules trapped in a tower and have to try and free him by performing seven dangerous tasks based around Hecules' original labours or about my series Sophie and the Shadow Woods which is about a very strong, tomboy heroine and her best friend, a boy called Sam as they fight horrible Shadow Creatures in the scary Shadow Woods - lots of action and humour in both talks! For younger readers I focus on an Early Reader series I have written about a magical toy monkey called Mr Monkey who belongs to Class 2 and who helps the children in the class solve their problems. For older readers, I like to use an action-packed fantasy novel I wrote with Steve Cole called Genie Us and also my new series about baking and friendship called Best Friends Bakery. However, I'm happy to adapt my talks as needed and am always open to suggestions!

Polly Bennett, ex-Deputy Head of Junior School, Ratcliffe College:

"A huge thank you for coming into school and speaking to us. All the children have spoken about since is Sophie and the Shadow Woods, shadow creatures and the next book they are going to read. They absolutely loved every minute of the talk and meeting you and I think we now have 130 budding authors!"
